Direct answer: usually after. A certified translation reflects the document as it stands on the day it is translated — stamps added later do not appear in it, and the receiving authority can ask for the translation to be done again.
Why the order matters
Attestation is a chain of confirmations on the source document: the issuing country, the UAE embassy there, and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs here. Where the receiving authority expects those stamps to appear in the Arabic translation — the common case for a foreign document used officially in the UAE — the chain has to be complete before the certified translation is prepared. Translate too early and you pay for the same certificate twice.
The exceptions
- Some authorities ask to see a translation earlier in the process.
- Some documents need a translation before they can be notarised in the UAE.
- A document issued in the UAE and used in the UAE does not go through the embassy chain at all; a UAE document going abroad runs the route in reverse.
- Documents carrying an apostille may follow a different path, depending on the issuing country and the receiving authority.
