When a Driving Licence Translation Is Needed in Dubai

You need a translation when the body receiving your licence cannot read it and has said so. That is the whole test. The common situations:

  • Exchanging a foreign licence at the RTA. Whether a translation is required at all depends on the issuing country and the language printed on the licence.
  • Motor insurance. Some insurers ask for a translated copy when the licence is not in Arabic or English.
  • Car hire and long-term rental. Rental desks set their own document rules.
  • Official identification and file evidence. Courts, employers, embassies, and government files sometimes need the licence as supporting ID, translated and certified.

Before you order anything, ask the receiving body two questions: does it want a translation, and does it want that translation certified and stamped? Those two answers decide what we prepare. If you do not know, tell us who is asking and we will tell you what is normally requested. Certified legal translation is Arabic ↔ English, handled in-house by the licensed translator. For other languages, send the document first and we confirm availability.

What the Translation Does, and What It Does Not Decide

A certified translation is an accurate, stamped rendering of what your licence says. That is what we produce and that is what we stand behind. It is not an eligibility decision. To be direct about the limits:

  • It does not convert your licence. Whether a foreign licence can be exchanged for a UAE one, and whether a driving test is required first, is set by the RTA according to the issuing country. Those rules change. A translation does not affect them.
  • It does not oblige an insurer to cover you. Underwriting is the insurer’s decision.
  • It does not make a rental company hand over a car. Rental desks apply their own policy.
  • It does not bind the receiving authority. We prepare the document to the requirements of the body it is going to. Acceptance is that body’s call, not ours.

An International Driving Permit is a different document again. It is issued by an authorised body in the country that issued your licence, not by a translation office, and a translation does not replace one.

What We Check on a Driving Licence

  • Issuing country and authority. We name the issuing authority as it appears on the document, not a generic equivalent.
  • License class or category. Codes such as B or C do not map neatly onto UAE categories. We translate the class exactly as printed, with its code, and leave equivalence to the authority that has to judge it.
  • Name spelling. The name on the licence has to be reconciled with your passport and, where relevant, your Emirates ID. Send your passport page with the licence and we match to it.
  • Dates. Issue date and expiry, including per-category dates where the licence carries them.
  • Restriction and endorsement codes. We render them as they appear rather than interpreting them.
  • Both sides. On most modern cards the categories, codes, and dates sit on the back.

If anything on the licence is unreadable, we ask for a better image. Guessing is how documents come back.

Driving Licence Translation and Notarisation in Dubai

Some receiving bodies want more than a certified translation. The usual extra step is notarisation of the translated copy. Occasionally an embassy or a foreign authority wants an attested set instead. The order matters: if the certified translation has to show a stamp, the stamp has to be on the document before it is translated. Doing it the other way round means translating twice.

What to Send, and What Happens Next

  1. A clear image of both sides of the licence: flat, in focus, all four corners visible, no glare across the hologram.
  2. The passport page showing your name, so the spelling can be matched.
  3. Where it is going. The RTA, a named insurer, a rental company, an employer, a court, an embassy.
  4. Whether the receiving body asked for certification, and whether notarisation was mentioned.
  5. Your deadline, if you have one.

Then we read the licence, confirm the language pair, flag anything that needs resolving, and send you a price with a realistic timeline for that specific job. What Usually Goes Wrong

  • Only the front of the card was sent, so the categories and their dates are missing.
  • The photograph was taken at an angle and the licence number or expiry date cannot be read with confidence.
  • The name on the licence is shorter than, or ordered differently from, the name on the passport.
  • The Arabic spelling of the name does not match the spelling already used on that person’s other UAE documents.
  • The licence has expired, and the receiving body will not take an expired document however well it is translated.
  • The translation was ordered as plain when the authority wanted it certified and stamped.
  • Someone assumed a licence class was equivalent to a UAE class, and the authority disagreed.

None of these are difficult problems. They are simply expensive to discover at the counter instead of at the quote.

If a correction is needed because of our mistake, we correct it promptly and at no extra charge. If the source document changes, new information is supplied, or the receiving authority asks for a different format, we explain the required update and confirm any cost before proceeding.
