Certified vs Legal Translation in the UAE: What’s the Difference?

The two words answer two different questions

Legal answers “what kind of content is this?” — documents that create or record rights and obligations, where a defined term or a party name carries legal weight. Certified answers “who stands behind this translation?” — in the UAE, a translator holding a Ministry of Justice license, whose stamp, signature, and license number appear on the document.

So a marriage certificate translated for a visa file is usually a certified translation of a civil document. A commercial contract translated for internal reading is a legal translation that may need no certification at all. A power of attorney going to a notary is both.

How to tell which one you need

1. Ask the receiving office. If a court, notary, ministry, embassy, or government department will rely on the document, they will normally require a certified translation.
2. Internal or informational use — reading a contract, understanding a judgment — usually needs accuracy, not a stamp.
3. When in doubt, send the document and name the destination. Certification is a separate step; paying for it when it is not needed, or skipping it when it is, both cost time.

The exception that catches people
